Can You Unring That Bell?

While the cause of “tinnitus” (the sensation of ringing in the ears when no external sound is present) is unknown, the condition has been linked to hearing loss that is either age- or noise-related. In fact, about 90 percent of people with tinnitus have some hearing loss caused by noise. With this in mind, those suffering from tinnitus may want to enlist the help of an audiologist to help with the proper fitting of a hearing instrument that addresses hearing loss. In many cases, tinnitus can be reduced when a person can better hear sounds around them. Another option is a tinnitus “noiser,” which introduces white noise that may help suppress tinnitus and make it less bothersome.

Whether you are hearing the sounds of tinnitus or not hearing the sounds of life around you, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with a clinical audiologist. With the many options available today thanks to innovative, advanced technology, your ability to hear can be enhanced and so will your quality of life. Stop by soon at The Ear Clinic for tinnitus evaluation and counseling, or call us at 226-909-0966 to find out about having a complimentary hearing evaluation at 46 Nelson Street W., across from the LCBO.

P.S. Tinnitus may occur as a result of taking certain medications, earwax blockage,and/or changes in the bones of the middle ear (otosclerosis).
