How Do We Hear?

Your hearing is a complex mechanism that allows you to experience the world through sound – connecting you to loved ones, music, and the sounds of life.
Understanding how we hear can empower you to take better care of your hearing health so you can continue to hear the life you love most.
The Anatomy of the Ear
The ear is divided into three main parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. Each section plays a specific role in the hearing process.
Outer Ear: This is the part you're most familiar with, which includes the pinna (the visible outer part) and the ear canal. The pinna acts like a funnel, directing sound waves into the ear canal.
Middle Ear: The sound waves travel down the ear canal and vibrate the eardrum, which separates the outer ear from the middle ear. Behind the eardrum, the middle ear contains three tiny bones called the ossicles: the hammer, anvil, and stirrup. These bones amplify the vibrations from the eardrum and transmit them to the inner ear.
Inner Ear: The inner ear contains the cochlea, a fluid-filled structure shaped like a spiral. As the vibrations pass into the cochlea they create waves in the fluid, which stimulate hair cells lining the cochlea, converting vibrations into electrical signals. These signals travel along the auditory nerve to the brain, where they are interpreted as sound.
You Had Me at “Hello!”
Let’s say that your friend, neighbour, or loved one spots you across the way and calls out your name, greeting you with a friendly “Hello!”
Hearing begins when the sound waves of that “Hello!” enter the outer ear and travel through the ear canal, causing the eardrum to vibrate. The vibrations are then transmitted through the ossicles, amplifying the sound.
The inner ear's cochlea converts these vibrations into nerve impulses that the brain interprets as distinct sounds.
This process occurs remarkably quickly – much more quickly than you might imagine! Within a matter of seconds, your auditory process gets to work to help your brain understand the sound wave, allowing you to greet your friend quickly and enjoy the conversation.
However, when hearing loss occurs, the connection you have with the sounds around you can diminish significantly, affecting not just communication but overall quality of life.
Hearing Loss Challenges
While the ear is an extraordinary structure, it is susceptible to issues that can interrupt this process. It’s crucial to address these challenges early and seek assistance.
Hearing loss can occur due to various reasons, including:
Aging: Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, affects many as they grow older, impacting their ability to hear high-frequency sounds.
Noise Exposure: Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can damage the hair cells in the cochlea, leading to irreversible hearing loss.
Infections and Medical Conditions: Ear infections, Meniere’s disease, and other medical conditions can also interfere with hearing.
Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to hearing loss, which can manifest at different life stages.
