Maximizing Hearing Aid Lifespan: Proven Moisture-Proofing Techniques

Hearing aids are a valuable investment for individuals with hearing loss. They can improve communication, enhance quality of life, and help reduce the negative effects of untreated hearing loss. However, hearing aids are susceptible to moisture damage which can significantly impact their lifespan and performance.
Moisture-Proofing Techniques for Hearing Aids
Moisture is one of the biggest enemies of hearing aids, causing corrosion and damage to sensitive electronic components. Fortunately, there are proven techniques to protect your hearing aids from moisture damage and prolong their lifespan.
Regular Cleaning and Drying
The first step in moisture-proofing your hearing aids is regular cleaning and drying. Wipe down the surface of your hearing aid daily with a soft cloth or tissue to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on it throughout the day. Make sure that you don't use any alcohol-based cleaners as they can cause further damage.
In addition to daily cleaning, it's important to dry your hearing aids thoroughly after exposure to moisture such as sweat or rain. Open the battery compartment door and remove the battery overnight or use a drying box designed specifically for this purpose.
Using Desiccants
A desiccant jar for hearing devices is used to store hearing devices over night to absorb moisture from the air around and from within your hearing aids. While not as powerful as electronic dehumidifiers, it may be sufficient for some hearing devices to keep them dry.
Using Dehumidifiers
A dehumidifier is an appliance that removes moisture from your hearing devices, that is created by the humidity in the air and the warmth of your body. If you live in a humid environment, using a dehumidifier can help to reduce the amount of moisture in the air and protect your hearing aids from damage.
You can also purchase electronic dehumidifiers specifically designed for hearing aids. These devices use heat and UV light to remove moisture from your hearing aid in under an hour. Some hearing devices chargers also provide a drying cycle while charging the devices.
Schedule Regular Maintenance Appointments
Attendance at your regularly-scheduled maintenance appointments is important to ensure your hearing devices are in top-notch condition to last many years. At The Ear Clinic every maintenance appointment includes a "spa" session for your hearing devices: a special treatment in our powerful Redux dehumidifier that draws moisture from your hearing devices and measures the amount of moisture withdrawn so we can keep you informed and help prevent premature failure of your valuable hearing devices due to unwanted moisture accumulation.
Conclusion
Moisture, next to ear wax and debris, is the most common cause of hearing aid damage, but with regular cleaning and drying, using desiccants or dehumidifiers, you can protect them from moisture damage and maximize their lifespan. Remember to consult with your hearing care provider for specific recommendations on how to care for your particular model of hearing aid.
If you have concerns about your hearing health, it is always a good idea to speak with your audiologist, who can help you identify potential risks and recommend strategies for maintaining good hearing health throughout your life.
