Pain Relievers And Hearing Loss

Most people don’t think twice about taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, of which there are two general types. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is best for pain that has not been caused by inflammation, while “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs” (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Another big difference between these two general categories of drugs is that recent research shows that women who took NSAIDs (most notably ibuprofen) for two or more days a week for at least six years experienced a 10% increased risk of hearing loss. Previous studies have linked pain relievers with hearing loss in men. Although the increased risk of hearing loss is relatively modest, the high prevalence of pain-reliever use makes it an issue.

P.S. Analgesic-induced hearing loss usually subsides after use of the pain reliever is discontinued.
