Your Hearing In Graphic Terms
In order to quantify and treat hearing loss, it is necessary to conduct a hearing test, the results of which are graphically represented on an “audiogram.” The audiogram illustrates hearing ability by showing the listener’s hearing threshold at various frequencies. Hearing threshold indicates how quiet a sound may be before it is inaudible. A hearing threshold of between 0 and 15 dB is considered normal. The vertical axis of the audiogram represents sound volume or intensity, which is measured in decibels (dB). The more one moves down the axis, the louder the sound becomes. The horizontal axis of the audiogram represents sound frequency or pitch measured in Hertz (Hz). An audiogram serves as the basis for a hearing-instrument fitting.
Once a hearing test has discovered that a hearing impairment exists, the next step is finding the perfect match between the patient and his or her individual impairment and lifestyle needs. P.S. An audiogram with a saucer-shaped slope indicates that hearing is better on the lower and higher ends of the frequency range than in the middle.
