Hearing Aid Repair

Is your hearing aid sounding off?

At The Ear Clinic, we can repair any style and most brands of hearing aids regardless of where they were purchased. Whether your hearing aid doesn’t sound right or won’t turn on, we can diagnose the issue and repair it. Bring your hearing aids into our clinic in Meaford and we’ll let you know whether we can repair it on-site or need to send it back to the manufacturer, provide a quote, and tell you exactly how long it will take to fix.

Regular Cleaning and Maintenance

Hearing aids are sensitive instruments that live in relatively inhospitable environments in and around our ears. Moisture and earwax (cerumen) are the two main reasons that hearing aids require repair. It’s important to wipe the moisture and wax off of your hearing aids with a clean cloth at the end of each day and extract excess moisture by storing them in a hearing aid-specific desiccant jar or electronic dehumidifier.  We’re happy to let you know which is the best option for your specific situation.

If your hearing aids use disposable batteries, leave the battery compartment open overnight to allow more moisture to escape. If there is a significant wax buildup in parts of your hearing aids, it’s best to bring them into us. We have the training and tools to carefully remove all the earwax and any other debris without damaging your hearing aids.

Earmolds and the tubes for BTE-style hearing aids need to be replaced periodically. Creating new earmolds can take up to two weeks, so it’s best to do this before your earmolds reach the point of not functioning at all.

Redux – Water Removal

As with all sensitive electronic devices, hearing aids should not be exposed to water or moisture of any kind. Wearing your hearing aids daily means they may collect moisture from the humidity of the air as well as from your body. Using a dehumidifying case with your devices could help with their shelf-life.

However, as we all know, accidents do happen! You may forget to remove your hearing aids before entering the shower or diving into the pool. You may get caught in a downpour on the way into your house and not have enough time to remove your hearing aids. Whatever the case, we offer an excellent solution: Redux.

Here at The Ear Clinic, we believe that hearing aids are an important investment in your overall health and well-being. This is why we are proud to offer Redux, an innovative water removal system for hearing aids.  With the push of a button, our Redux dryer removes moisture from your hearing aids, rendering them good as new! Redux cites a study that reports that “moisture was removed from 98 percent of treated hearing aids, with functionality improving by 77 percent; this data was based on thousands of dries.”

Redux is a powerful solution combining vacuum drying and controlled low heat to effectively remove any moisture in your hearing aids. This technology is invaluable and ensures that hearing aid users can continue to experience the benefits of their devices!

If your hearing aids are malfunctioning or not turning on from water damage, contact us immediately and see what Redux can do to help.

Repair or Refit?

Sometimes hearing aids sound wrong even though they’re working properly.

This is usually because our hearing loss profile changes over time. It may be that you require refitting to meet your changing needs. Hearing loss tends to progress over time, and eventually plateau at a certain point. If you haven’t been wearing hearing aids that long, it could be that you require an adjustment. If your hearing aids are feeding back a lot (whistling), this is sometimes an indicator that a refit is necessary. It can also be a sign of an accumulation of wax (cerumen) your ears. If you require refitting, or earwax removal, we can usually complete either service during a single office visit.

Repair or Replace?

We are frequently asked whether it is worth repairing a set of hearing aids, or if it is better to replace them. If your hearing aids are under warranty, it is usually best to have them repaired. Once they are out of warranty, there are some considerations to make.

Hearing aids tend to have a lifespan in the range of 3-7 years, about the same as a smartphone. While the average lifespan is about 5 years, it can vary widely due to a number of factors. Most hearing aids have the potential to last a long time, but they do spend most of their time in and around our ears. Our body’s chemistry and the climate we live in both affect them in different ways. If we spend a lot of time out of doors, environmental moisture will take a toll. If we exercise regularly, our sweat will have an effect, as well. Some people have very dry earwax that doesn’t seem to cause much of a problem for their hearing aids, while others may have a wetter earwax that works its way into the nooks and crannies of the hearing aids. Until you’ve gone through one set of hearing aids, it’s hard to predict how long a set will last.

If your hearing aids are four or more years old and you’re considering making a significant repair out of warranty, another thing to consider is the current state of hearing aid technology. New computer chips are coming out every few years that can vastly improve the functionality of hearing aids. Even if you may be able to get another year or two out of your current hearing aids, you may wish to upgrade to a newer model, as the newer technology might solve some issues you may be experiencing, such as hearing well in challenging listening environments.

Hearing aid manufacturers are typically unable to access replacement parts after 5 years from the release date of a particular model, which can make a repair difficult or impossible. We’ll be able to tell you very quickly whether replacement parts are no longer available for your hearing aids.

If your hearing aids are giving you trouble, bring them into our office and we can discuss the next step to getting you hearing your best again!
