Hearing aids tend to have a lifespan in the range of 3-7 years, about the same as a smartphone. While the average lifespan is about 5 years, it can vary widely due to a number of factors. Most hearing aids have the potential to last a long time, but they do spend most of their time in and around our ears. Our body’s chemistry and the climate we live in both affect them in different ways. If we spend a lot of time out of doors, environmental moisture will take a toll. If we exercise regularly, our sweat will have an effect, as well. Some people have very dry earwax that doesn’t seem to cause much of a problem for their hearing aids, while others may have a wetter earwax that works its way into the nooks and crannies of the hearing aids. Until you’ve gone through one set of hearing aids, it’s hard to predict how long a set will last.

If your hearing aids are four or more years old and you’re considering making a significant repair out of warranty, another thing to consider is the current state of hearing aid technology. New computer chips are coming out every few years that can vastly improve the functionality of hearing aids. Even if you may be able to get another year or two out of your current hearing aids, you may wish to upgrade to a newer model, as the newer technology might solve some issues you may be experiencing, such as hearing well in challenging listening environments.

Hearing aid manufacturers are typically unable to access replacement parts after 5 years from the release date of a particular model, which can make a repair difficult or impossible. We’ll be able to tell you very quickly whether replacement parts are no longer available for your hearing aids.
