Tinnitus

What is Tinnitus? (Ringing in your ears)

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of an external stimulus, often described as a hissing, humming, ringing, buzzing or roaring sound heard in one or both ears or somewhere in the head. Often a symptom of hearing loss or other ear-related problems caused by noise exposure, aging, ear infections, ear wax, medications, head injury, etc., tinnitus affects tens of millions of children and adults in Canada and the US alone.  People with tinnitus are likely to report greater stress, irritability, anxiety, and depression and some studies have found tinnitus can alter the way the mind processes emotions.

What we can do to help

Relaxation techniques can reduce the stress that can make tinnitus worse.
For example by:

Slowing down the heart rate
Lowering blood pressure
Slowing breathing

They help to refocus your attention away from your tinnitus to
something calming.

Every person differs in how they react to stress and what their tinnitus
triggers are, so talk to us and explore various relaxation techniques to
find what works best for you.

What we can do to help

If you experience tinnitus, contact us to schedule a tinnitus assessment. We will begin with a thorough case history and comprehensive audiological evaluation. The goal is to manage your reaction to your tinnitus and reduce the amount of time you notice and are annoyed by your tinnitus, and involves educational counselling and, often, the use of hearing devices. Be sure to mention that you are booking your test because of your tinnitus.
